After Amateur

Utilizing quotes from Thomas Page McBee’s Amateur alongside depictions of my body, "After Amateur" works to interrogate my deep discomfort with the perceived masculinity that has been ascribed to me since starting gender-affirming hormones. To present as masculine is to embody a position of power that I neither earned nor desire. A strange dichotomy exists between the comfort and freedom in my body that gender-affirming care has provided, and the uneasiness that presenting as masculine socially has caused. This piece invites others to sit with this detachment of self and perceived self.
